Tom Bunzel

Tom Bunzel specializes in knowing what presenters need and how to make technology work. He has appeared on Tech TV's Call for Help and has been a featured speaker at InfoComm and PowerPoint LIVE, as well as working as a technology coach for corporations including Iomega, MTA Films, Nurses in Partnership, and the Neuroscience Education Institute. Bunzel has taught regularly at Learning Tree International, West LA College Extension, and privately around Southern California and does presentation and video consulting.
Bunzel's upcoming book for Wiley/Jossey Bass, Tools of Engagement: Presenting and Training in a World of Social Media will be published in the fall of 2010. The various upgrades to MS Excel have lots of bells and whistles that are labor intensive to learn and may or may not be worth the effort. Perhaps the most famous, tech-savvy mobile worker of all time was James Bond.  Equipped with incredible gadgets for security and communications by his IT manager, “Q,” Bond was a typical remote employee in the sense that he thrived on autonomy and independence.

Managing Bond was no picnic for the head of the Secret Service, “M,” who tried to enforce strict control and to communicate clear objectives, but Bond always got the job done—his way.  And he managed to stay employed through dozens of novels and movies (not to mention seven actors).

While today’s manager may not be willing to grant a mobile worker a license to kill, she still needs to clarify objectives, maintain channels of clear communications, and evaluate whether tasks were completed and deliverables obtained—holding  the worker accountable for the results. READ MORE

My father was old school and hands-on. He paid attention to every aspect of his department to make sure the results were what he expected and demanded from his staff.

No matter what hardware or software solutions are implemented for mobile workers, the dispersal of equipment and the variety of components can be a real challenge for IT managers.

Three areas of concern need to be addressed in order to hold the right people accountable for organizational assets used away from the office:

True Asset Management of the organization’s inventory of mobile and other devices and related equipment must be kept in a comprehensive system, recording who is responsible for the equipment and where it is physically located.

License and Warranty Compliance to ensure normal operations and adherence to legal and organizational policies.

Intellectual Property/Data Storage and Protection involves even more attention to detail when workers are in remote locations and using various devices. IT needs a strategy to track and synchronize all kinds of files and data, from documents to e-mail to contact and financial information – and make sure that it is backed up and kept secure from outside breaches.
